Module 1 introduces the history of the practice of embalming from the ancient Egyptians up to modern day and the changing reasons, aims and objectives of each period. We explore the legal requirements and legislative framework that surround the practice, the Health and Safety ramifications associated with embalming and investigate the topics of immunity and infection.
Successful completion of Module 1 is essential in order to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of safe systems of work within the mortuary environment.
Module 2 provides us with a perspective on the microscopic world of the cell, and how cells link together to form the tissues of the body and an exploration of the disorders and diseases relating to them and how they can impact on the embalming process.
Module 3 takes us further into our exploration of tissues with a look at bone and blood, and then we discover how tissues link together to form systems in our journey around the Musculo-skeletal system and the Cardiovascular system, with an extended visit to the wonder that is the human heart.
Module 4 sees the other systems of the body covered in detail; the respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous and endocrine systems are the topics covered with organs of the special sense touched
upon for completeness. The use of surface of anatomy is vital for the professional embalmer and along with an exploration of post-mortem changes in the human body rounds off the module.
Module 5 is specific to the embalming process itself, exploring the theory underpinning the different methodologies and techniques available to the professional problem solving embalmer and acts to consolidate the practical work thus far undertaken.
Upon successful completion of the 5 theory exams associated with these modules and achieving a consistent sufficient standard of practical work then the candidate can apply for the 2 practical examinations, consisting of a non-autopsied case and an autopsied case.
At this stage the candidate may, on successful completion of these 2 practical examinations apply for full membership of the British Institute of Embalmers.
